Thick and Robust Barbecue sauce and Happy Fourth to You!

When you live 25 miles from the closest grocery store you learn to make lists. Now I can make lists all day long but I always seem to leave them on the kitchen counter, or hidden in my purse (or whose knows where else they end up). Anyway, they are never to be found until we are on our return trip home.

My husband has been wanting to barbecue chicken on the grill, one of his summer dinnertime favorites. So when it came time to start the preparation for the chicken, he could not find the sauce. And since I seemed to have misplaced “the list” on the last particular trip it appears we did not have any. Uh-oh….. but it all worked out in the end, we found a great recipe on – line from Southern magazine. I never realized how easy and quick a condiment like this would be to make. The BBQ sauce was delicious and can keep up to a week refrigerated.

Recipe slightly adapted from Southern Living, click here for original recipe.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup Worcestershire
1 garlic clove (minced)
2 tablespoons chopped onion
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

To prepare:

In a medium saucepan over medium heat add all the ingredients together and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 40 minutes stirring occasionally. (your sauce will thicken as it cools).

This is a great sauce for grilling, Happy Fourth of July everybody! Picture below is from last year's La De Da parade. Always a little quirky but always loads of fun. A copy of the rules here.

Mysavoryspoon was first started in 2010 as a way to journal recipes that I had collected from cookbooks, magazines, family and friends. Most everything was savory, using legumes and whole grains. Along the way I discovered a love for baking. Now a couple times a month you might see some type of sweet pie or treat.

  3. This is a great BBQ sauce! Not a ton of ketchup and good amounts of dry mustard and brown sugar. What a parade! I'm wondering how many elephants and llamas were in it. A grocery store is 3-4 minutes from me and I don't know what I'd do with it! :-) Happy 4th and La De Da Day!

  13. Take 2: Looks soooo good, Cheri. And this is from one who rarely eats chicken...(and if I do it has to come from Whole Foods.) Cute story about your lists...I can relate and so now I use sticky post-its...But your way might be better as it seems to lead to fantabulous sauces! Happy 4th of July!

  18. Happy 4th of July. I live very close to the shops but still get annoyed when I arrive and find I've left my list at home on my kitchen bench. Can't believe how often I do it! I think the sauce ingredients you have listed are wonderful and that chicken must be abundant in flavour xx

  19. I confess that I have never made a BBQ sauce. And, as I near the age of 57 (the number of varieties boasted by Heinz), I think it is time to remedy this problem! Thanks for the simple and delicious-sounding recipe, Cheri!

  23. If I lived that far from a grocery store, I'd really have to improve my list-making. And I have an unfortunate tendency to leave my list at home, too.
Your parade sounds like fun! Did you march in it?

    1. Hi Beth, no we did not walk in the parade, my husband and I are on the trails crew but we are kind of shy that way. Sounds like were kind of the same about lists. Take care!

  27. Our motto is, "if it's not on the list, it doesn't exist!". We can't live without our grocery list, and forget it all too often. Mrs KR found a phone grocery list app that we've been using -- it synchs between both our phones in real time, so if we're in different parts of the store getting things, we can each remove things from the list, and the other one will know all about it. Really handy! Anyway, I love making my own BBQ sauce -- this looks really tasty. Thanks!

  29. I used to have a plack that said "I got my stuff all put together, and then forgot where I put it". The only way I can keep track of lists I make is to put the list on my iPhone. Otherwise I may not find them until weeks later. This way I only have to fine my phone. Love the BBQ sauce!

  31. I've been making my own bbq sauce from a recipe I got from a neighbor back in Maine too many years ago to admit. I swear the recipe is nearly identical to this one. The recipe I have is in my father's handwriting and says, "Mrs. Barker's Famous BBQ Sauce" and it ends with "deelish". :)
