Dulce de Leche

Dulce de leche is a thick caramel like sauce that is prepared by slowly heating sweetened condensed milk. Literally translated it means "candy of milk". There are many different versions of this, depending on which region of the country you live in. A Mexican version called Cajeta is made from goats milk. Here I used the simplest method available which is pouring sweetened condensed milk into a small baking vessel and then placing this dish in a larger one filled halfway with water.

Keeping with this weeks theme of Cinco De Mayo, I purchased sweetened condensed milk for dessert for the first time. Frankly I was very surprised by my non sweets loving husband's reaction as he totally loved this. I can see how this ingredient could be good in other desserts as well; such as pie. This is the easiest 1 ingredient recipe I have ever done.

This recipe is adapted from Scarletta Bakes. com, who also resides here in sunny Phoenix Arizona.

Ingredients:

1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk

To prepare:

Preheat oven to 425F.

Pour sweetened condensed milk into ramekins. Cover tightly with aluminum foil.

Fill pan with hot water, cover tightly with foil and bake 60 to 90 minutes.

Beat with fork until smooth. Good over ice cream and drizzled over cake or brownies.

  4. Delicious! I just throw the can into a saucepan of boiling water for a couple of hours but do worry that it may boil dry and the can explode. Not sure whether licking Dulce de leche from the kitchen walls would be a good or a bad thing.

  5. Oh, I've never made this but I love the simple instructions so I'm on it. I'm looking up at Anne's comment - yikes! Explode? lol. Definitely would be a big mess.

  13. Looks very tempting and I do love caramel. Don't normally buy condensed milk either but I happen to have a few tins in the cupboard as I'd planned to make a recipe with them before Christmas and ran out of time - think this could be a great use for them.
